JUKEBOX

Some people are too talented. Actor, comedian, writer, director, novelist, singer and musician (piano, guitar, harmonica, saxophone, drums), Hugh Laurie is infuriatingly so. Still best known for his portrayal of REVIEWSmaverick doctor, Gregory House, he is the highest paid actor on American TV. Laurie himself makes no claims that 'Let Them Talk' is anything other than a well intentioned vanity project. A woozy collection of Delta blues and New Orleans trade standards, all drowned heartache and deep south tales of hardship, he concedes in his sleeve-note disclaimer that as a white, middle-class, English actor, authenticity isn't on his side. As a lifelong fan of the blues though, he suggests that what he lacks in credentials he makes up for in passion. He's also a talented piano player, which helps, and if it's jarring at first to hear this most British of British actors pretending to be bleary-eyed bluesman, by the end of St. James Infirmary's thickly atmospheric stomp and the plinky-plonky booze-up of You Don't Know My Mind, his passion has already won out. The stale air and hazy slouch of The Whale Has Swallowed Me is bitter, bruised and creepy as hell. Six Cold Feet trudges like it's just crawled out of the Mississippi, Battle Of Jericho rumbles and murmurs like a proper spiritual should, adding his distinctive growl to After You've Gone. Aficionados may balk at an actor trespassing on sacred ground, but even they'd have to admit, that for a white, middle-class Englishman, Hugh Laurie plays a surprisingly convincing bluesman.
